School Philosophy
Vision:
As a learning community guided by our catholic identity, Mercedes College proclaims hope for the future grounded in our faith in the gospel of Jesus.
As an internationally focussed, co-educational school in the Mercy tradition, we aspire to develop global citizens, committed to living with responsibility, integrity, compassion, loyalty, mutual respect and dedicated to justice, whose passion is to make a positive difference in our world.
Ethos:
The ethos of Mercedes College underpins all that we do and is centred on the following:
- Mercedes College is a school of innovative educational endeavour and a leader within Catholic education. Excellence and the pursuit of excellence, and an expectation that each student will become the best person he or she can be, are primary goals.
- Mercedes College provides a strong values-centred Catholic education based on the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy. The keys of integrity, loyalty, compassion, justice, mutual respect and responsibility are core values that are central to school policy and practice. Within this tradition, students engage with those least advantaged in the local and global community and reflect upon this experience. They are expected to develop a social conscience, to become socially critical and realize that individuals can make a difference.
- Mercedes College is a "community for the world". Our identity is consciously shaped within the Catholic Church, and through participation in the international education community.
- Community is a pivotal dimension. Each member of the College, past, present and future is important. There is an acceptance and celebration of diversity, difference and individual self-worth.
- The partnership of parents, students and staff in learning together forms the essence of the infrastructure of the College.
- The governance of Mercedes College is ensured by the creative stewardship of the College Council, the school administration and participation of the wider school community.
