Information Technology

The vision of the Information Technology department is to see all members of the Mercedes College community using technology to enhance the way they work.


Mercedes College is, and will continue to be, the centre of learning for today and tomorrow.

We are committed to ensuring that every individual has equitable opportunities to use a variety of learning technologies to enhance the learning process. The use of learning technologies in the curriculum is integral to promoting higher order learning skills in students.

Mission Statement

The use of Information Technology will be integrated throughout Mercedes College, enabling staff and students to comfortably use equipment as seamless tools to complete their necessary tasks with a minimum of stress and anxiety.

The department of Information Technology will support the endeavours of the College to produce a curriculum that is designed to enhance, broaden, strengthen and transform learning to produce:

  • Students prepared for a future workplace where the ability to access, analyse, interpret and communicate information in a meaningful way is highly prized
  • Teachers and students who become partners in learning, enjoying the benefits of mutually energetic discovery opportunities to the development of wisdom

Facilities

The infrastructure of information technology at Mercedes College consists of an extensive Novell network of PC-based computers or laptops, connected with active switching technology. Resources available to users include networked printers (including colour laser printers and digital photocopiers), video streaming, data projectors, scanners, digital cameras, CD-burners and a variety of software.

The distribution of 350 PCs is designed to cater for the different pedagogical styles and learning needs of R-12 classes. Generally, this consists of

  • Numerous computer suites (20-30 computers) for whole class activities, each with a dedicated networked laser printer, scanner and data projector
  • Networked computers distributed throughout most classrooms and the research area of the library
  • Wireless networked laptops
  • Smaller pods (up to 6 computers) are located throughout the College for specialised small group work
  • All buildings are connected to the Local Area Network using optic fibre
  • All users have access to the Internet through a permanent 10 Mg wireless connection.
  • All staff and students have personal e-mail accounts
  • A range of software titles is provided under network control
  • Interactive whiteboards in the majority of classrooms
  • Student use of Information Technology is monitored under the Mercedes College Acceptable Use Policy
