SA Certificate of Education (SACE)

South Australian Certificate of Education
Years 11 and 12


The South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) is awarded to students who successfully complete their senior secondary education. The Senior Secondary Assessment Board of South Australia (SSABSA) administers the SACE for all schools in South Australia. The SACE qualifies students for admission to universities throughout Australia.

The SACE meets community expectations that school-leavers should have:

  • Developed skills and knowledge for successful participation in Australian society
  • Achieved a certain level of literacy
  • Studied a broad range of subjects
  • Been equipped to undertake further studies and employment

Students studying for the SACE undertake a course of subjects, usually over two years . Stage 1 (Year 11) and Stage 2 (Year 12). Specific compulsory requirements are necessary to complete the SACE:

  • Satisfactory achievement of required subjects at Stage 1: English or English as a Second Language, Australian Studies and Mathematics
  • Completion of a writing based literacy assessment
  • Satisfactory achievement of three full year subjects at Stage 2
